Almost all the vineyards are located in and around Johannisberg, at the foot of the Taunus mountains. Geologically, the location of their vineyards have unique characteristics. Under 20cm of topsoil, the ground holds pure Taunus-quartzite. The roots of the old vines go very deep into the ground. Therefore, they are supplied with highly mineralised groundwater. Thanks to the constant westerly winds that are characteristic of the Johannisberg plateau, even during rainy years the grapes dry out very quickly and therefore remain healthy. This is how their fine, high-quality ricing becomes uniquely fresh, playful and fruity. This is why vineyard sites such as Johannisberger Hölle and Johannisberger Vogelsang have a unique structure.
