International Sauvignon Blanc Day 2020!

International Sauvignon Blanc Day 2020!

Zesty, crisp, smoky, mineral, oaky, with explosive aromas of gooseberry, cut grass or highly aromatic, which one do you prefer? Sauvignon Blanc has a wide range of styles and it’s rare to find a person who doesn’t love this grape, such a food-friendly wine!

Sauvignon Blanc, a.k.a. Blanc Fume, Muskat-Silvaner, Fumé Blanc or Sauvignon among other names, is a white grape variety originated in the Loire Valley of France. It’s a key wine grape in Loire Region, especially, in Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. The flavor profile of Sauvignon Blanc from this region has a typical smoky, mineral and zesty character. This “wild white” grape is a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon which was created after the crossing Sauvignon Blanc with Cabernet Franc.

It has gained a big recognition also in Bordeaux where it’s blended with Sémillon and Muscadelle creating both world’s greatest oak-aged dessert wines and crisp refreshing mineral-driven whites. The Bordeaux whites from Pessac-Léognan are known for their rich and buttery taste!

Sauvignon Blanc is the third most planted white variety in the world and has become so popular that the grape has its own holiday: International Sauvignon Blanc Day! The celebration was created in 2010 by the New Zealand Wines group to shine light on this variety that made them famous worldwide 35 years ago. Local Sauvignon Blancs are tend to be fuller-bodied, more fruit-forward with tropical fruit flavors.

This successful grape is celebrated on the first Friday in May every year and is now part of the international calendar with array of wine and food events. This year International Sauvignon Blanc Day will be marked on Friday the 1st of May celebrating its tenth anniversary.

If you are a wine lover, open up a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and celebrate with the rest of the world! Cheers!
