Malbec World Day 2020!

Malbec World Day 2020!

Malbec has become the iconic variety and international flagship of Argentina' s viticulture. This grape, an inky purple fruit, originated from South West France, where it’s commonly called Côt, was brought to Argentina in the 19th century.

Every year on April 17 we commemorate the day of a strong transformation of Argentina's wine industry in 1853. It was that day when the Argentinian president Domingo Faustino Sarmiento commissioned  the French agronomist Michel Aimé Pouget to bring over new grape varieties. Amongst them was also Malbec. The innovative project was designed to enhance the national wine industry. And, indeed, it worked out well!

In the following decades, Malbec quickly adapted and spread to the different Argentinean terroirs where developed with even better results than in France.

Thanks to its great adaptability and integrated railway system, Malbec, locally known as la uva francesa, became the most planted red grape in Argentina.

After 1956 when France faced devastating frost and the majority of Malbec vineyards were wiped out, Argentina became the unique country growing original Malbec vines of French origin.

After a wine crisis in 80’, Argentina began its 20-year recovering project. By 2009 the cultivated area of Malbec in the country increased by 173%.

In Argentine wine industry the year 2010 was full of prominent changes. It was exactly the year when the Malbec consumption remarkably increased in the USA. The growth accelerated to 60% in 12 months! The same year the Argentine government proclaimed wine as Argentina’s national liquor.

The consequence of all this was that, on April 17, 2011, the Malbec World Day (known as MWD) was established in Argentina. The event was organized by Wines of Argentina (WOFA). It’s the Association of Argentinean winemakers who, since 1993, have been promoting the brand and the country image of Argentine wines around the world.

Nowadays, Malbec World Day is a global initiative and has been celebrated in more than 60 cities around the world.

So, raise a glass of Malbec and pay tribute to this wine star that shines all over the world on this special day!
