Austria concentrates a large number of small estates in its eastern part, growing a considerable amount of local and other European grape varieties. Because the climate is too harsh in the mountainous part of the country, which covers most of it, Austria concentrates its 50 000 hectares of vineyards in the east on the border with the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia. The country's viticultural tradition is the number of grape varieties cultivated, which is very large, allowing it to correspond as much as possible to consumer expectations. There are several varieties such as the autochthonous Grüner Veltliner, which is the main Austrian white grape variety and produces the best wines in Lower Austria. There are also European varieties such as Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder), Traminer, Riesling or Sauvignon.
