French wines have become a symbol of top quality wines with tradition. France is the country where the term terroir and the appellation system were born. The broad variety of soil, diversity of wine styles and suitable climatic conditions have contributed to the creation of the most precious and also the most expensive wines. Exquisite wines from Champagne, classy aged Bordeaux or elegant wines from Burgundy have made France famous all over the world.

Alsace is protected from rain and western winds by the Vosges Mountains. It's also one of the driest areas of France. According to the classic Alsatian wine law, only seven (mainly white) varieties can be grown here: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Sylvaner, Muscat and Pinot Noir. Alsace wines are dry, deliciously aromatic and well balanced on the palate.

Bordeaux, the world's best-known wine region, currently has 57 appellations and covers an area of 120,000 hectares which makes it the largest wine region in France. Thanks to its unique location we traditionally divide Bordeaux into the left and right banks. The dominant grape of the left bank (Médoc and Graves) is Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for up to 70% of production. The right bank is dominated by Merlot.

Thanks to the diversity of the local terroir, Burgundy wines are authentic, complex and elegant. Thus, no wonder that the world's rarest and most expensive wines come from this region. The prominent grape varieties are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. There are others too, such as Aligoté, Gamay, Pinot Gris, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The wine region Champagne is located in the northeast of France. It is a landscape full of chalk hills. That's why its original Latin name campania means rolling countryside. The area is divided into four major regions: the Montagne de Reims, the Vallée de la Marne, the Côte des Blancs and the Côte des Bar. According the wine law, Champagne wines can be made only from these seven grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Arbane and Petit Meslier.

AOC Languedoc is the warmest wine region of France. The Mediterranean climate, fabulous aroma of garrigue and diversity of local soil, all this helps to create fruit-driven and full-bodied wines.

Among the most famous appellations: Corbières, Minervois, Faugères, Saint-Chinian. Traditional cultivated black varieties include Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
The Loire Valley lies south-west of Paris and Loire is the longest river in France. It's a region of magnificent castles, but also of high quality wines. The wines from the north are either varietal (Syrah is the only black grape) or blends using only few allowed varieties (such as Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne).

The Southern Rhône, flatter and warmer area, is much richer in cépage.
